History/Background; Haruhi was born in a commoner's family. Her mother was a lawyer and her father (slightly gay... or he himself said he was bi.) who was an employee at a liquor store. Sadly, her mother died three years ago when she was in the 3rd grade, leaving Haruhi (the cold child) with her father (who's slightly gay). Those two lived harmoniously together. Soon after, her father began to work at a gay bar which marked the time that he started to cross dress, buying stuffs (especially those brand name merchandise for Haruhi) which constantly leaving the family in debt.

The smart Haruhi was very popular in Middle School, to the point that there's at least one person each month who would confess his feelings for her. Obviously, she turned them down (unknowingly). She also passed the exam to Ouran Gakuin, a private school for rich kids, and got full scholarship for it as well. Just that day, she accidentally met the Host Club (she was looking for a room to study... apparently to her, the 3rd Music room was empty). Since she cut her hair and wearing thick glasses, wearing her dad's clothes because they resemble more of the uniform, the Host Club members thought she was a gay guy. They probbed all over her because of her 'common' appearances. Accidentally, Haruhi knocked over an expensive vase for auction thus put her into an eight million yen debt. Having no choice, Haruhi must worked as their 'dog' to pay off the debt. In some coincidence, the twins took off her glasses and the Host Club was surprised of her cuteness and immediately made her into a host. Interestingly, when Haruhi was changing sometimes, Tamaki boldly opened the curtain (since he was looking for her and being so dramatic all the time...) and found out that Haruhi really is a girl. Thus a series of events happened (dramatic and comedic) to prevent other people from finding out (aside from the Host Club).

Personality; Haruhi is quite different from other girls. She is very simple, or as the twins put it - she's plain. Due to the fact she was born in a poor setting, Haruhi was industrious and practical. This characteristic can be seen even when she was little. Because of her father's imfluence (past and present), she likes both masculine and feminine things. In fact, she has almost no sense of gender conscience (as to why the Host Club members thought she was a guy first) and can take out any clothes lying around and put them on (even if they turn out not as fashionable or cute).

Even so, Haruhi is very sensitive and a straight-forward individual. But her lack of hesitation in expressing her opinions often lead her to say malicious things (without intention of course) and those things hurt others most of the time. She is also seen as a stubborn person because of her history. Often when she is being very stubbornly independent, it gets her into trouble. That said, she couldn't also understand very well why her father and Tamaki are worried about her. Also, she's very dense when it comes to romantic interest, she simply could not see anyone would be interested in her and she has never been able to acknowledge a love confession. Moreover, Haruhi is the only one who can tell the twins apart probably because she's very empathetic and perceptive.
